How long Invisalign takes

Most people assume that orthodontic treatment means years of appointments, lots of time at the practice and a daily life full of restrictions. With clear Invisalign aligners, those concerns are simply not justified.

Invisalign is a gentle and almost invisible method of tooth correction. The treatment usually only takes a few months and brings no real restrictions in daily life. While wearing Invisalign, you can eat what you like and stick to your normal oral hygiene routine. No annoying, visible wires that trap food or make you self-conscious about smiling. Invisalign was designed to straighten your teeth discreetly.

It is important that you have regular check-ups with your dentist throughout the treatment, to make sure everything is on track and your teeth are moving into the right position.

Is treatment with Invisalign faster?

Invisalign is often seen as a faster treatment for certain types of misalignment, because the overall treatment time is usually shorter than with traditional fixed braces. That said, there is no blanket answer for how quickly Invisalign treatment goes — it varies a lot from case to case.

The duration depends on factors like the severity of the misalignment, the patient's age and the individual treatment plan. As mentioned, regular check-ups with your dentist are key throughout the treatment to make sure it is succeeding and the teeth are moving into the right position.

Invisalign duration per tray

At the start of treatment we hand you all of your trays and you change them yourself. For the very first tray we recommend 14 days of wear, since teeth usually shift a little more between the first 3D scan and the start of treatment. That makes the first tray sit slightly tighter. With a 14-day wear time your teeth get enough time to adapt to the new tray and move into the required position.

For the trays that follow, talk to your dentist about the exact wear time. As a rule, Invisalign trays are changed on a 7-14 day cycle. The recommended interval depends partly on how complex the planned movements are per tray, and partly on your own discipline — because you should be wearing the tray 18-22 hours a day and only taking it out to eat, drink or brush.

Shortening Invisalign duration

The rule is simple: the more consistently you stick to your daily wear time, the sooner you can shorten the cycle. Wearing your aligners as instructed gives the teeth enough time to move into the required position, which lets you switch trays sooner. If you have been wearing your aligners consistently, you can in many cases switch to the next set before the 14 days are up. You will notice it because the trays no longer sit firmly and come out very easily.

Just do not rush it. If you have not worn your trays long enough, the next set will exert heavy pressure on your teeth when you switch — that is not just uncomfortable, it is also not good for your teeth. So pay attention, watch how it is going and stick to the wear time. Always make sure every tooth seats well in the tray and that you can remove the aligner easily. If you are unsure, check in with your dentist.

How long the treatment takes overall

Small misalignments corrected in 3 months

How long the correction takes depends entirely on your misalignment. The simpler the case, the shorter the treatment. A simple front-tooth correction can take 3 months; a moderate misalignment averages 6 months. This category includes gaps and crowding. If you also have a bite issue on top of the misalignment, treatment usually runs at least 7 months. Correcting bite issues and rotating teeth are the so-called heavy movements, which take a bit more time. At a free consultation you can find out exactly how long your tooth correction will take.

Visible aesthetic changes

You can usually spot the first visible changes after just a few weeks. How quickly depends a lot on how complex your treatment is. With mild misalignments, visible progress often shows up sooner. With more complex corrections it can take a little longer. For example, if there is not enough room in the dental arch to fit crowded teeth, the back teeth are usually moved first — or the arch is widened — to make space. Those back-end movements are not immediately visible to you, but they are essential to the correction. Because every misalignment, every jaw and every treatment is individual, there is no general answer for when you will see the first visible results.

Invisalign production time

Producing your Invisalign trays takes around 3-4 weeks. The trays are not made in Germany — they are produced in San José, California. Once we have created and confirmed your treatment plan, production begins. The clear trays are made of the patented SmartTrack material and manufactured to high precision using state-of-the-art 3D printing. They are custom-made and exclusively yours.
